POWERS OF TEN
Educational math program to learn to calculate with powers of ten
Powers of ten is an item of algebra that causes
sometimes problems for the math students of
high schools. Therefore we have developed the educational program
"Powers of Ten".
With this educational software you will learn to write powers of ten as decimal numbers,
how to multiply and divide powers of ten, how to multiply with
the square root and how
to raise a power to a power to ten. There are seven different
exercises.
It is also possible to play for a High Score, which will surely
increase the motivation!
The program is
Ms-dos based, and will already work on rather "old"
computers,
but also in Windows 3.x and in the newest computers with Windows
95/98+, XP etc.
It is suitable for high schools or elementary schools, for
students aged between about 11
and 17 years, but could of course also be used at home.

Theory:
What are powers of ten?
With powers of ten you can write in an easy way large and small numbers:
For example
10n means 10x10x10x .... 10 (n factors) and
10-n means 1/(10x10x10x...10) (n factors)
The base is here 10; the exponents are n y -n .
For example:
10 = 10x10x10 = 1000
10 = 10x10 = 100
10-1 = 0.1
10-3 = 0.001
By agreement 100 = 1
It is also handy to know that, for example, 105 is an 1 followed by 5 zeros,
and that 10-5 is an 1 with 5 zeros ahead: 10 = 0.00001
How much is a number multiplied by a power of ten?
For example:
3x101 = 3 x 10 = 30
4.8x105 = 4,8 x 100000 = 480000
3x10-1 = 3 x 1/10 = 3 x 0.1 = 0.3
4.8x10-3 = 4.8 x 1/1000 = 0.0048
How do you multiply powers of ten?
You multiply them by adding their exponents.
For example:
103 x 102 = 103+2 = 105 ( = 1000 x 100 = 100000 = 105 )
103 x 10-2 = 103-2 = 101 ( = 1000 x 0.01 = 101)
How do you divide powers of ten?
You divide powers of ten by subtracting their exponents.
For example:
105 /103 = 10 5-3 = 10 2 = 100
How do you multiply with the square root of ten?
First it is handy to write:
V10 = 100.5 (V=square root). Then you add the exponents.
V10 x 10 = 100.5 x 101 = 100.5+1 = 101.5
How do you raise a power to a power of ten?
You multiply the exponents.
For example:
( 10 3 ) 2 = 103x2 = 106 = 1000 x 1000 = 1000000
